A Christmas Story: The Musical at Ordway Center for the Performing Arts

A Christmas Story: The Musical

Ordway Center for the Performing Arts
345 Washington St St. Paul

A Christmas Story: The Musical is the hilarious account of one boy's desperate quest to ensure that the one thing he wants most in the world ends up under his Christmas tree: an official Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200-shot Range Model Air Rifle. Based on the beloved 1983 holiday movie, this delightful musical comedy takes a nostalgic look back at the 1940s-era childhood holiday memories of one Ralphie Parker. With the show's funny and heartfelt songs by Benj Pasek & Justin Paul, as well as a faithful yet inventive book by Joseph Robinette, young and old alike will delight in watching Ralphie's wacky family muddle through the Yuletide with heart, humor -- and one incredibly tacky leg lamp.

A Christmas Story: The Musical Reviews

Star Tribune - Recommended

"...Grandmas will chortle over the line, “Careful, it’s plastic,” as will 9-year-olds on hearing that “Oh, fudge” was once considered a curse. Of all the show’s charms, perhaps the most ingenious is that it truly offers something for every generation."

Twin Cities Daily Planet - Highly Recommended

"...This is a show that is for an audience of all ages. Adults will most likely enjoy the humorous commentary from the Narrator/Jean Shepherd (Gary Briggle) a little more, but the script by Joseph Robinette is laced with jokes and situational comedy that plays well at all ages. The choreography by James Rocco and Sharon Halley shines, the house set designed by J. Branson and built by Penumbra Theatre is a nice play on a book cutaway, and the miking excellent–several touring shows that will not be mentioned could benefit from listening more to the Ordway’s sound engineers, who were in top form as they managed the wide variety of voices and voice types on stage. It’s a polished, campy, and charming show, whether or not you’ve seen the movie–and despite a network television tradition of 24-hour broadcasts, many of the audience members have not."

Twin Cities Pioneer Press - Highly Recommended

"...The final message is the triumph of love and the power of hope in spite of all obstacles -- a fine theme for the Christmas season, especially when leavened with liberal doses of humor, music and dancing."

How Was The Show - Highly Recommended

"...The Ordway is doing it up big this holiday season. "A Christmas Story the Musical" is a big show: big cast; big sets gliding on and off, and big production numbers that wow with a wink, as if to say, "We know this is a little over the top for the subject, but let's go for it." And it's smothered in nostalgia, from the kids' plaid wool coats to mom in an apron, this is feel-good stuff all the way. If what you're looking for is "warm and fuzzy" (done up in a big way) this is your show."
