A Hill in Natchez at Southern Theater

A Hill in Natchez

Southern Theater
1420 Washington Ave S Minneapolis

Disbelief washed over director Joe Horton when he visited an obscure roadside memorial in Natchez, Mississippi. Surely, this gentle slope of green grass couldn't be the site of one of the most notorious slave markets in U.S. history? Was it a triumph or a tragedy that the notorious "Forks of the Road Slave Market" was now such a forgettable, anonymous place? This multi-layered ambiguity ultimately inspired Horton to create his latest work, the beautiful and unsettling A Hill in Natchez. Through a hallucinatory mix of music, visuals and dance, Horton tells the story of a woman and man caught in the "strange gravity" of slavery. Seen through their eyes, the New World is an ever-evolving mosaic of violent and seductive symbols dictating laws they are bound by yet can't quite understand. Experience this bold new work at The Southern Theater.
