A Night in Olympus at Illusion Theater

A Night in Olympus

Illusion Theater
528 Hennepin Avenue Minneapolis

It's prom night at sleepy Olympus High for awkward wallflower Maggie, who'd much rather watch zombie movies with her friend Harry. But this night isn't like any other, as suddenly, Maggie's wish to date popular dreamboat Chad comes true -- turning a very average Maggie into a gorgeous knockout while the rest of the school goes berserk. A Night in Olympus is a madcap, mythological mash-up musical about love, beauty, chipmunks and the end of the world. Co-written by Bill Corbett and Jeffrey Hatcher, this fun and freaky look at a high school will give you a night you won't forget at Minneapolis' Illusion Theater.

  A Night in Olympus Reviews

Star Tribune - Recommended

"...Composer Poling gives all the ensemble members (Norah Long, Dieter Bierbrauer and Randy Schmeling round out the cast) moments to shine. The score - which ranges from pop to a smattering of hip-hop to the polka-esque "What's Your Supershark?" - is delivered brightly by a quintet led by Jason Hansen."

"...Yes, there are moments when the book and/or the lyrics feel as if they might have been ... well ... informed by other contemporary musicals like "Zombie Prom" and "Xanadu." And honestly? The trend of musicals with scores filled with homages to Other Kinds of Music is going to wear thin sooner or later. But for the here and now, "A Night in Olympus" is a witty, well-done evening of fun."

Talkin Broadway - Somewhat Recommended

"...While I chuckled here and there, and felt my heart warmed now and then, there is not enough substance in A Night in Olympus for the show to be something to think about, not enough buoyant energy for it to elevate one's spirits, and not enough artistry for it to impress on the basis of high theatrical craft. With its clever premise and a hugely talented creative team, the potential may be there to bring this show aloft, but at this point it seems like an Olympian task."

"...There is a lot of random humor in the show and the running gag about the parking lot is hilarious. But most of the humor is not situational humor which is often the key to great musical comedies like A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum or The Book of Mormon. But despite the structural flaws, the audience on opening night was very enthusiastic about the music and gave the cast a standing ovation."
