"...Henley wrote "Crimes of the Heart" on the edge of caricature. That's the challenge for a production intent on thrilling us with the characters' eccentricities and at the same time coaxing us into a humanity that draws a tear or a lump in the throat. Lorca's staging shows us the former - complete with funny mugs and laughs - at an arm's length. We are never quite invited into the real and humid universe of the Magrath family, never asked to take them seriously. And that can be tiring."

"...Family reunions in times of crisis being what they are, the titular crimes of the heart are far more numerous than they first appear – and sometimes long-buried. Beth Henley's script is engaging, new developments and revelations come quickly, and two and a half hours pass in a much shorter-seeming span of time. The production tugs at heartstrings in the same breaths as it provokes chuckles and uproarious laughter."

"...Crimes of the Heart doesn’t need to be a downer; it is thematically interesting, and there are plenty of moments of tenderness and humor amid the tragic undertones. But Marcela Lorca‘s direction has veered so far to the other extreme that I found myself surrounded by laughter as one character desperately tried to commit suicide. When we are invited to laugh at real mental anguish, it becomes clear that some of the play’s artistic integrity (and maybe our own sense of compassion) is being sacrificed to please crowds."
