  God Girl at History Theatre

God Girl

History Theatre
30 East Tenth Street St. Paul

In 1975, with the war in Vietnam finally over and the women's liberation movement in full swing, a group of women were admitted into the Master of Divinity program at Princeton Theological Seminary -- a first in the country. Among these trailblazers was Kristine Holmgren, an idealistic and determined young Macalester College grad who wanted to change the world, starting with her ordination to ministry. Now Holmgren, a Presbyterian pastor and former Star Tribune columnist, shares her remarkable true story in God Girl, which draws from her personal experiences and reflects on the hard work and heartbreak experienced by the brave women who dared to break through the "stained glass ceiling" within the Protestant church.

  God Girl Reviews

Star Tribune - Somewhat Recommended

"...Despite Ron Peluso's snappy direction and set changes that cleverly amp up the energy, "God Girl" too often derails itself with meandering scenes that stall the pace. For example, Dooley's character reveals himself as a self-promoting opportunist within the first few minutes of the sermon he delivers in the first act. We don't need several more minutes of the same to get the point."

Twin Cities Pioneer Press - Recommended

"...If you want to get a sense of that struggle, you will find a solid slice of it onstage at St. Paul's History Theatre in "God Girl." It's about minister/playwright Kristine Holmgren's mid-'70s experiences in a very old, set-in-its-ways Ivy League seminary and the travails she and her female classmates endured to change minds and practices. While the male characters say plenty to make you wince and moan -- yet not doubt such words were said -- Holmgren's script and the cast's colorful portrayals make this an enlightening journey into the past that echoes in modern workplaces."
