  Harvey at Guthrie Theatre

Harvey

Guthrie Theatre
818 South 2nd Street Minneapolis

Elwood P. Dowd is charming, lovable and kind with just one catch: his best friend is a 6-foot-tall invisible rabbit named Harvey. When Elwood's sister Veta hosts a social gathering to launch her daughter into society, Elwood's idiosyncrasies threaten to upset the family's reputation. Veta tries to have him committed to the sanatorium, but a whirlwind of confusion and chaos ensues as the town tries to catch a man and his invisible rabbit. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Harvey is a delightful comedy for the whole family.

  Harvey Reviews

Star Tribune - Somewhat Recommended

"...This is a defensible interpretation, but what makes “Harvey” worth watching is the whimsical, light portrait of an innocent savant who is not so much smart as he is wise and guileless. Dowd is a strange and rare bird who has stumbled into something marvelous and, shedding ego and awareness, he offers himself to those who need his gift. Several moments are written specifically to illustrate these selfless and humane qualities, though they are not fully observed amid the mayhem."

How Was The Show - Recommended

"...None of Harvey would work without a magnetic turn from a leading man playing Elwood, and the Guthrie certainly gives its audience that with David Kelly, full of awe-shucks charm and earnest benevolence. He speaks with every other character as though they were the most interesting person alive, and the performance draws indomitable empathy from the players and audience alike."

Aisle Say Twin Cities - Highly Recommended

"...Harvey, the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Mary Chase and film, starring Jimmy Stewart, gets the screwball comedy treatment at the Guthrie Theater through May 15. The play will entertain all audiences with its broad comedic turns, gentle rebuke of social conformity and support of individuality and joyful innocence. Harvey is superbly acted and laugh-out-loud funny. For those who crave a little message with their theater fare, Harvey delivers a few timeless ones: be true to yourself, be kind to others and be open to the possibility of magic."
