Show Information

Old Log Theater

Star Tribune- Recommended

"...The young actors ooze charisma, from Frank Joseph Moran's slick and soulful Elvis to Eric Sargent's stoic Cash. Eric Morris steals the show as Lewis. His character is constantly in motion, as if the music's spirit cannot be contained in his lean body. And while Elvis had a friend present at the session, I doubt she performed firebrand versions of "Fever" and "I Hear You Knocking" the way Mollie Fischer does at the Old Log."

"...And Old Log's production serves the music well, as the actors playing those four Americana icons all play their own instruments, accompanied by a skilled trio as the Sun Studio house band. With 22 songs of the era packed into an intermission-less 105 minutes, it's a rock and roll party as breezy as a sun-splashed cruise around neighboring Lake Minnetonka."

"...Director R. Kent Knutson makes very effective use of a modest stage-allowing the six main characters to interact together or in small groups on the side. Scenic and lighting designer Erik Paulson captures the intimate and unassuming feel of the Sun Records studio, with darkly lit solid red brick walls and rudimentary sound booth. A grainy, oversized photo of the real Million Dollar Quartet taken in 1956 hangs at the center of the stage. The giddy, un-self-conscious and as yet untrammelled faces take on a certain poignancy when, at the play's close, Phillips reminds us that for the four, there would not be nearly enough days as happy as this one in the years to come."

"...Million Dollar Quartet, now playing at the Old Log, is a fun musical romp through rock and roll history. As jukebox musicals go, this one is quite pleasant and thankfully concise; too many such shows end up cramming too much music and exposition, leaving out the essential personalities and characters that draw audience in the first place. It’s not Elvis’s music that draws people to an Elvis impersonator concert – it’s the Elvis zeitgeist – some combination of the character, the look, the history, and the myth."
