Bloomington Theatre and Art Center presents On The Town
Apr 2, 2013

Bloomington Center for the ArtsBloomington Theatre and Art Center (BTAC) is excited to announce the return of Wendy Lehr as director for the upcoming Bloomington Civic Theatre (BCT) production of On the Town. Performances will be taking place in the Schneider Theater April 26th through May 26th.

A classic American musical comedy, On the Town is one of Broadway's most energetic and inventive musicals. Three sailors come to New York City on a whirlwind, one day leave, to seek adventures, embrace life and find a girl! Along the way they knock down a reconstructed dinosaur, visit Coney Island and have fun at some lively night clubs. Set against the backdrop of WWII and the sailors' own uncertain futures, On the Town is an exuberant and poignant comedy. On the Town was Leonard Bernstein's first Broadway score. Experience this show the way it was meant to be: with full orchestration from BCT's live orchestra, large, energetic dance sequences and amusingly innovative sets.

BCT is happy to have Wendy Lehr return to direct On The Town! Wendy has been a part of the Twin Cities theater scene for the past 50 years. She is perhaps best known for her long affiliation with Children's Theater Company where she was a member of the adult acting company from 1966-1986 and Associate Artistic Director and Director of Education from 1990-1998. Her regional credits include acting for The Arizona Theater Company and acting and directing at Seaside Music Theater (Daytona Beach) and Lyric Opera Cleveland. Closer to home, Wendy has appeared on numerous Twin Cities stages: Jungle Theater, Guthrie Theater, Ordway, Park Square Theatre, Illusion Theater, History Theatre, Theatre de la Jeune Lune, Theater Latte Da and The Playwrights' Center. Her directing credits include Park Square Theatre, Children's Theatre Company and the Ordway. She has been an adjunct faculty member at the University of Minnesota. In 2005 she was influential in the creation of a performing arts charter high school, Saint Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists (SPCPA) and took artistic leadership there until 2010. The Lehr Theater in downtown St. Paul was named by SPCPA in her honor. Other accolades include the Sally Ordway Irvine Award for Commitment and The Ivey Lifetime Achievement Award. Wendy made her BCT debut last year directing Crimes of the Heart.

BCT is a program of the Bloomington Theatre and Art Center (BTAC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization formed in 2009 from the merger of Bloomington Civic Theatre and Bloomington Art Center. BTAC offers high quality theater productions, art education for children and adults, and visual arts exhibitions featuring the work of emerging and established artists from Minnesota and surrounding states. BCT is proud to be a participating theater in the Twin Cities Ivey Awards.
