Dreamless Land gets area premiere
Apr 5, 2013

Dreamless LandRed Eye's 29th season continues April 12-28 with the area premiere of DREAMLESS LAND by Julia Jarcho. Figuring out what is fiction and what is real is part of the fun of this smart new work from the youngest member of the 13P playwrights' collective, as scenes fluidly morph from one state into another.

We get introduced to Haley as a teenager, whose best friend Morton is about to meet his estranged father in Las Vegas. As Haley imagines Morton's experience, she creates her own rendition of her friend's fractured family life through scenes right out of a horror movie, a James Bond flick, and a romantic comedy. Flash forward 10 years and Haley's grown up routine begins to dissolve in a similar series of fantastical interruptions.

Collaborating on the production with director Steve Busa is resident designer Liz Josheff (costumes & props), along with Heidi Eckwall (lights), Gary Johnson (set), and Ross Orenstein (sound design). The cast features Susanna Stahlmann as Haley, Mark Benzel as her friend Morton, Bruce Abas as Carver, and Red Eye stalwart Miriam Must as Joyce.

About the playwright: Julia Jarcho is a playwright and director from New York City. Her plays include Grimly Handsome (Incubator Arts Project, 2013), Dreamless Land (New York City Players, 2011), American Treasure (13P, New York, 2009 and Bay Area Playwrights Festival 2009), The Highwayman (NTUSA performance space, Brooklyn, 2004; published in The Best American Short Plays of 2005-2006, Applause Books), A Small Hole (Performance Lab 115, FringeNYC, 2006), All I Do Is Dream of You (Sophiensaele and English Theatre Berlin, 2006), Take Me Away(Il faut brûler pour briller festival, Paris, 2007), The Whole Tree (Electric) (Playwrights Foundation In The Rough Reading Series 2008), and Nursery (Young Playwrights Festival, Cherry Lane Theater, New York, 2001). As a performer, she has worked with Aaron Landsman, Tory Vazquez, Richard Maxwell, Trish Fox, Tal Yarden, Ami Garmon, and Ásta Bennie Hostetter. She was a writer-in-residence at the 2002 Eugene O'Neill Playwrights Conference and won a Berrilla Kerr award the same year. She has been a Resident Playwright at the Playwrights Foundation, a board member of Young Playwrights Inc., and a member of the New York-based playwrights' collective 13P.
