Minneapolis Musical Theatre Announces 2013-14 Season
Jun 1, 2013

New Century TheatreMinneapolis Musical Theatre and Hennepin Theatre Trust announced today that MMT's 2013-14 season will feature Twin Cities debuts of Carrie The Musical, Five Course Love and Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson at the Trust's New Century Theatre. Carrie The Musical, based on Stephen King's bestselling novel, runs October 4-27, 2013. Five Course Love, a quintet of humorous and witty vignettes about true love, plays January 24-February 16, 2014. The comedic rock musical Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson will run June 6-29, 2014. This trio of shows will be directed by Steven Meerdink, Minneapolis Musical Theatre's artistic director.

Carrie The Musical
October 4-27, 2013

Based on Stephen King's bestselling novel, Carrie The Musical tells the tale of Carrie White, a misfit bullied at school by the popular crowd and at the mercy of her loving, but cruelly over-protective mother. But Carrie's just discovered she's got a special power, and if pushed too far, she's not afraid to use it. The show originally opened on Broadway in 1988 and the authors have joined with director Stafford Arima and Marymount Manhattan College to produce this newly reworked and gripping version. Time Magazine says, "The show has guts. This score does what a musical score should do: it moves the show along, illuminates the characters and deepens the emotions. Carrie The Musical has real weight and emotional conviction." Set today in the small town of Chamberlain, Maine, it features a book by Lawrence D. Cohen (screenwriter of the classic 1976 film directed by Brian DePalma and starring Sissy Spacek), music by Academy Award-winner Michael Gore ("Fame," Terms of Endearment") and lyrics by Academy Award-winner Dean Pitchford ("Fame," Footloose.")

Five Course Love
January 24 - February 16, 2014

Showcasing three actors playing fifteen different characters in five different restaurants, Five Course Love explores the hunt for one true love. The evening begins at Dean's Old-Fashioned All-American Down-Home Bar-B-Que Texas Eats, where a blind date goes charbroiled wrong. Next, at the Trattoria Pericolo, a mob wife has a secret rendezvous behind her husband's back. At De Schlupfwinkel Speiseplatz, a waiter, a dominatrix and her kept man discover at the same hilarious moment that they are all dating each other.

In Ernesto's Cantina, a hill bandit and his rival battle for the hand of the beautiful Rosalinda. And at the Star-Lite Diner, a waitress pines for her true love and gets a little help from Cupid in making her dreams come true. "Five Course Love is artfully silly and genuinely funny...hilarious and imaginative," says The Associated Press. It ran off-Broadway at the Minetta Lane Theatre in 2005 and features a book, music and lyrics by Gregg Coffin.

Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson
June 6-29, 2014

Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson audaciously redefines America's seventh president, the populist who invented the Democratic party and doubled the size of our nation, with a raucous blend of outrageous comedy, anarchic theatricality and an infectious rock score. Andrew Jackson was America's first political maverick-A.J. kicked British butt, shafted the Indians and smacked down the Spaniards all in the name of these United States. Who cares if he didn't have permission? An exhilarating and white-knuckled look at one of our nation's founding rock stars, this wildly entertaining musical re-creates and re-invents the life of "Old Hickory," from his humble beginnings on the Tennessee frontier to his days as Commander in Chief. It also asks the question, "Is wanting to have a beer with someone reason enough to elect him? What if he's really, really hot?" With a book by Alex Timbers and music and lyrics by Michael Friedman, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson opened on Broadway in 2010 and was nominated for two Tony Awards. The New York Times calls it "The most entertaining and most perceptive political theatre of the season. Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson manages to be a goofy delight and a perversely affecting comment on the American temperament at the same time."

This will be the second season in the partnership between Minneapolis Musical Theatre and Hennepin Theatre Trust following productions of Reefer Madness and Sunset Boulevard in February and June 2013. This Trust and MMT partnership builds on the strengths of both organizations by combining resources in artistic exploration, audience development, community outreach and downtown revival to locally showcase new or rarely seen musical works.
