Roman Holiday

Guthrie Theatre
818 South 2nd Street Minneapolis

More than fifty years after the making of the romantic comedy film, the story returns -- this time to the stage -- in a musical based on the iconic motion picture, featuring a full scoring of the songs of Cole Porter, including "Easy to Love," "Begin the Beguine," "Just One of Those Things" and "Night and Day." Princess Ann is on a widely publicized tour of several European capitals, including Rome. One night she rebels against the strenuous demands of her official duties, and goes out alone to experience the city. She meets an American newspaperman who, seeking an exclusive story, pretends ignorance of her true identity. But his plan falters as they fall in love. For the hopeless romantic, Roman Holiday is not to be missed!

Star Tribune - Recommended

"... Yes, "Roman Holiday" is old, but as the new musical that opened at the Guthrie Theater on Friday ably demonstrates, "old" can be "timeless." This fragile confection is built with elegance and sophistication around the idea that here we have a fairy tale about escape and impossible love. And try as we might -- in our edgy hauteur -- we cannot help but appreciate the sleek nostalgia wrapped in a love story. So sue me, I'm sentimental."

"... Kudos to director John Miller-Stephany, choreographer Alex Sanchez and musical director Andrew Cooke for turning the show into fine summertime fun. Todd Rosenthal's set design combines nice bits of sculpture and architecture with giant projections of scenery -- especially effective when the princess and Bradley motor through the Roman streets on their Vespa."

How Was The Show - Recommended

"... I know, many of my criticisms of Roman Holiday Ė its predictability, its toothlessness Ė are the very things that will attract audiences. So you must make a decision: do you like Porterís amazing music, and fabulous design, and outstanding acting and singing enough to ignore a garbled and uninvolving story? If so, by all means, see Roman Holiday. You wonít be disappointed."

Aisle Say Twin Cities - Highly Recommended

"...The Guthrie Theaterís new musical production of Roman Holiday, based on the iconic 1953 movie and book by Paul Blake, has all the glamour, glitz and stylish corniness you would expect from a romantic comedy set to classic, toe-tapping Cole Porter tunes performed by a fabulous live pit orchestra (under the musical direction of Andrew Cook). The Guthrieís perfect date night and girls night out musical event offers amazing lead singers with Stephanie Rothenberg as Princess Anne (in the Audrey Hepburn role) and Edward Watts as Joe Bradley (in the Gregory Peck role), exuberant choreography and ensemble dancers, 1950s-inspired costumes, a wildly talented supporting cast and a richly designed set."
