Jeffrey Hatcher's Hamlet at Illusion Theater

Jeffrey Hatcher's Hamlet

Illusion Theater
528 Hennepin Avenue Minneapolis

Acclaimed playwright and screenwriter Jeffrey Hatcher -- writer of Casanova with Heath Ledger and The Duchess with Keira Knightley -- now presents Hamlet with ... Jeffrey Hatcher. That's right, Hatcher himself takes the stage to tell the tale of this particularly tragic Dane in Jeffrey Hatcher's Hamlet, a solo show at the Illusion Theater. Back when he was 10 years old, Hatcher adapted, directed and performed a production of Hamlet starring his fifth-grade classmates. The first show sold out, as did the second and a career was born in humble Steubenville, Ohio. Now, decades later, the successful writer ruminates on his early start on the stage. Incorporating memories of his Ohio Valley childhood, this clever and deeply-felt show celebrates theater as home, refuge and platform.

  Jeffrey Hatcher's Hamlet Reviews

Star Tribune - Recommended

"...The 80-minute one-act is set in a classroom, and the chalkboard is actually a screen for projected images, mostly black-and-white. In one of them, we see a dour little Jeffrey, suited up and wearing his deerstalker Sherlock Holmes detective cap. We don’t have to imagine his isolation and loneliness. We see it on his pinched, pudgy face. This is not a young man destined for great things on the playing field."

"...Throughout, our narrator colors the scenes with evocative and often very funny metaphors and similes, proving a droll but delightful companion who never lets his memories slip into sentimental nostalgia. It's relatively low-key fun that doesn't deliver a powerful message or build to a strong climax. But that's OK, for it's a tale more about the journey toward staging a work than the destination of when the lights go up in front of an audience. This affectionate, refreshingly clear-eyed valentine to theater left me hoping to find Hatcher speaking his own words on area stages more often."
