Choir Boy
Guthrie Theatre
818 South 2nd Street Minneapolis
The Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys is dedicated to the creation of strong, ethical black men. Pharus is confident and charismatic, and he wants nothing more than to take his rightful place as leader of the school’s legendary gospel choir. But his differences lead classmates to lash out with slurs tinged with more than a little jealousy. Can he find his way inside the hallowed halls of this institution if he sings in his own key?
From the writer of The Brother/Sister Trilogy (The Brothers Size, In the Red and Brown Water and Marcus; Or the Secret of Sweet) is this provocative new play featuring gospel music. The New York Times called Choir Boy “vivid, magnetic, and moving,” while Variety raved that the play “sings with smarts and heart.”

How Was The Show - Recommended
"...The Choir Boy set soars. Under Rothstein’s guiding hand, designers Michael Hoover (sets), Trevor Bowen (clothes), Ryan Connelly (lights) and Sean Healey (sound) have created a severe but effective set of interlocking platforms. It raises the actors up, something I’ve never before seen in this space, and gives them presence."
