  Queens at Park Square Theatre

Queens

Park Square Theatre
20 W 7th Pl St. Paul

For Raymond Queens, boxing is not about belts or titles; it's a job. A job that provides food, a room, a purpose. A job that provides a chance to say he was here, a chance to say his life matters. Set in the early 1900s, Queens is the story of a man fighting his way up from bare knuckles to gloves to his own sense of worth.

  Queens Reviews

Talkin Broadway - Somewhat Recommended

"...Sandbox Theatre is a collaborative of ten theater artists with a "focus on visual dramaturgy-storytelling through design and movement-and maintaining a devotion to only creating new work." Their newest ensemble-created piece, Queens, is now on view at Park Square Theatre's Boss Stage. True to their aim, the strengths of this production are the movement and design, as well as music that is a constant presence throughout the show. Queens differs from my last encounter with Sandbox's work, last fall's The Little Pilot, in having a more linear narrative and more spoken dialogue, closer in form to a traditional play. In that regard, Queens is not as strong an offering."

One Girl Two Cities - Recommended

"...Over time, Raymond defines himself as a boxer, and he gets to the point where he can't picture himself outside of that realm. But he also knows that it's not a lifestyle he can sustain forever. How often do we do this to ourselves? We tell people more about what roles we have and not the kind of people we are. What's at the root of why we do what we do? Queens asks us some challenging introspective questions, and I appreciate Sandbox for making me do some serious thinking."
