The Heidi Chronicles
Guthrie Theatre
818 South 2nd Street Minneapolis
The Heidi Chronicles traces the coming of age of Heidi Holland from high school in the radical ʼ60s to her career as an art historian in the heartless ʼ80s. As Heidi determines her place in society and how to juggle success and failures in work, friendship and romance, The Heidi Chronicles asks the ever-present question: Can women have it all? Variety raved "not many plays manage Heidi's feat of inducing almost continuous laughter while forcing the audience to examine its preconceptions," while the New York Daily News called it "not just a funny play, but a wise one." Leigh Silverman, the Tony Award-nominated director of the hit Broadway musical Violet, will make her Guthrie debut at the helm of this Pulitzer Prize-winning gem.

The Heidi Chronicles Reviews
Star Tribune - Somewhat Recommended
"...At least those three are plunging forward — blindly on occasion — into the unkown. Wetherhead’s Heidi keeps uncertainty at arm’s length. Is this wisdom or the fear of making a mistake? Perhaps those are two sides of the same coin and we admire the sensibility of caution. That doesn’t make for riveting drama. Heidi has chums, career, opportunities, disappointments. She’s not feeling totally complete but hey, welcome to the world, my friend."

"...I'm not the first critic to point this out, and the choice may well have been an intentional one for the playwright. But a quarter-century removed from the play's 1988 premiere, the combination of passing time, the advances of feminism and the lack of a strong central character makes the play seem a bit dusty. Perhaps seeking to mitigate this, Leigh Silverman, who directs the current Guthrie Theater production, makes Heidi a supporting character rather than the center of the proceedings."
