Under the Gaslight at Minnesota Centennial Showboat

Under the Gaslight

Minnesota Centennial Showboat
100 Yacht Club Rd. W Saint Paul

In Under the Gaslight, the young and beautiful Laura runs away from home when a dark secret shatters her dreams of getting married. But soon, calamity befalls her -- first a brute along the road tries to abduct her, later a soldier fights for her honor in a brawl, and before long someone is tied to the railroad tracks in need of a rescue. As Laura's wild and harrowing adventures continue, the Twin Cities' own Minnesota Centennial Showboat Players invite you to get in on the action by booing the bad guys and cheering the heroes in this spirited 19th-century melodrama, with live piano accompaniment.

  Under the Gaslight Reviews

Talkin Broadway - Highly Recommended

"...In what appears to be its final production at the Minnesota Centennial Showboat, the University of Minnesota's Department of Theater Arts & Dance offers Augustin Daly's 1867 melodrama Under the Gaslight. Sometimes said to epitomize a genre that dominated North American stages from 1850 through 1920, the play was also the inaugural production of the Showboat's first season in 1958. Its present incarnation, adopted and lovingly directed by John Miller-Stephany, runs though August 27 and it is terrific."
