Yussle the Muscle
Illusion Theater
528 Hennepin Avenue Minneapolis
Inspired by a true story, Yussle the Muscle: A Fable from the Sweet Science of Bruising looks back at the friendship between German heavyweight boxer Max Schmeling and his savvy Jewish-American manager Yussle (Joe) Jacobs, who helped him achieve fame and success in the U.S. in the late 1920s. Becoming the world champion of his weight class in 1930 and starring in some legendary fights with American Joe Louis, Schmeling himself became an object of Nazi propaganda, which led to Dr. Joseph Goebbels, the Third Reich's Minister of Public Propaganda, discouraging the tight relationship between Jacobs and the boxer. David Feldhshuh's play appears as part of the 2015 Fresh Ink Series from Minneapolis' Illusion Theater.
