4000 Miles at Park Square Theatre

4000 Miles

Park Square Theatre
20 W 7th Pl St. Paul

In the middle of the night, 21-year-old Leo arrives on his grandmother's doorstep. Jobless, aimless and apparently alone, Leo has traveled across the country on his bike. Vera is happy to see her grandson, but she knows something is amiss. The two should be able to find common ground - Leo has inherited Vera's lefty views - but they find nothing that connects them. Just when their seven-decade age difference threatens to drive them apart once and for all, a terrible secret from Leo's past surfaces. A young man and an old woman try to bridge a generational divide wider than miles and rediscover a family's heart.

Star Tribune - Recommended

"...Linda Kelsey offers up an impressively layered and meticulous performance as Vera. This isn’t your stereotypical cookie-baking grandma. A self-avowed “lefty,” she’s an idiosyncratic and salty firebrand, impatient, critical and unconventional. For all her seemingly youthful outlook, however, she’s also clearly feeling her age as she moves carefully, strains to hear conversations and struggles to find words. Plays that give such centrality to older female characters are still rare and it’s a pleasure to see how much Kelsey wrests from this meaty role."

"...Don't get me wrong. I love "most plays." But, without even thinking about it, everyone who goes to a fair amount of theater probably recognizes the structure of a well-made play: the momentum that indicates an act is about to end, the agenda that crystallizes near the end of Act One, the line of dialogue that signifies the approaching finale with an ironic jab or a we've-all-learned-something fade-out. Amy Herzog's "4,000 Miles," now playing at Park Square Theatre, has none of those things, but it's a very satisfying evening of theater, nonetheless."

"...Vera is played by the estimable Linda Kelsey. Initially I was frightened that I might have to employ the C-word – caricature – when I described Kelsey. And occasionally, yes, as when Vera struggles groaning to her feet, Kelsey’s performance does veer near caricature. But all in all, Kelsey work is smart, compelling, lovely, a rich portrait of a woman nearing the end of her life with dignity and zest. “I hate not being able to find my words,” Vera says and we feel, thanks to Kelsey’s arresting performance, her frustration."
