Carrie The Musical at New Century Theatre

Carrie The Musical

New Century Theatre
615 Hennepin Avenue Minneapolis

Based on Stephen King's bestselling novel, Carrie The Musical tells the tale of Carrie White, a misfit bullied at school by the popular crowd and at the mercy of her loving, but cruelly over-protective mother. But Carrie's just discovered she's got a special power, and if pushed too far, she's not afraid to use it. The show originally opened on Broadway in 1988 and the authors have joined with director Stafford Arima and Marymount Manhattan College to produce this newly reworked and gripping version.

"...Meerdink gives the show a contemporary relevance by focusing on the elements of bullying in the story. He is so effective that there were moments when I had knots in my stomach at the abuse heaped on the poor misfit, Carrie White."

"...Carrie The Musical spends more time in high school and less time at home where the root of the evil lives (her mother). The revised production doesn’t ignore the home life—it just chooses to focus on the cruelty of high school. The modern touches (e.g. smart phones) add a relevant layer of bullying. At times, Carrie The Musical feels like a hybrid of High School Musical and Mean Girls. The songs border on cliché, but manage to give insight into characters and their motivations—especially Margaret (aka Mama) White (Lori Maxwell). The production brings to the life the angst of high school and effectively makes you rejoice that those four years are long over. The cast does a wonderful job to acheive the dark side of high school. Jill Iverson does the unlikely and shines as Carrie White, and Rebecca Gebhardt is cunning as the queen bully, Chris Hargensen."

"...Give credit to MMT for taking on this problematic musical, which has intrigued theatergoers for 25 years, even as they've been unable to see it anywhere. The musical is a perfect fit with MMT's mission to give local audiences a shot at rarely performed shows, and there are things here that deserve to be showcased, including some lovely songs and a fantastic title role. Director Steven Meerdink's production makes the best of the musical's strengths but struggles to fix problems that may be unfixable, starting with the show's awkwardly serious tone, which seems to be fighting to keep a straight face when what it wants to do is smirk.
