  Disenchanted! at Illusion Theater

Disenchanted!

Illusion Theater
528 Hennepin Avenue Minneapolis

Think fairy tales are a little overexposed these days? Well, so do their stars. Disenchanted! features all of your favorite disgruntled princesses as they come together to "storm the castle" and take their lives back from the countless movie studios and toy merchandisers exploiting their happily ever afters. Mark Bergren, a former Disney writer-director, directs this hilarious sendup, with music direction by two-time Ivey Award winner Raymond Berg (Urinetown: The Musical) and Lori Dokken. Here's your chance to catch Disenchanted! before it heads off to New York for an off-Broadway production.

  Disenchanted! Reviews

Star Tribune - Recommended

"...“Disenchanted” definitely comes with a message, but it’s delivered with a large dose of often naughty humor (and be warned, this show is not appropriate for a younger audience). Big bawdy musical numbers that mock male illustrators’ obsession with mammary glands, for example, more than make up for some uneven transitions and a couple of songs that are more predictable than fresh."

Twin Cities Daily Planet - Highly Recommended

"...Disenchanted! has been working its way through the regional theater circuit for the past several years, something that shows in its polish and refinement. This is a show with the legs to go places–and, indeed, the current Minneapolis run by Casting Spells Production is its last stop before opening Off-Broadway for the holidays. If Disney’s been part of your diet, catch it while you can."

Twin Cities Pioneer Press - Recommended

"...Developed at an Orlando, Fla., (ahem) fringe festival, "Disenchanted" uses that snappy little premise to introduce songs that decry racism ("Finally"), ignorance of history ("Honestly"), literary license ("Not One Red Cent"), objectification ("All I Want To Do Is Eat") and, of course, sexism (can't print that song title in this newspaper but it has to do with ample bosoms). "Disenchanted" dips into all of those subjects with a light touch and a bit of mild raunch -- since, as we're warned at the top of the musical, "This show ain't for kiddies, folks.""

How Was The Show - Recommended

"...In case you missed it last year, “Disenchanted!” has returned for a pre-holidays run at the Illusion Theater. Bright, clever and all in good fun, this modern take on the heroines of classic children’s Disney movies also has a solid—and serious—premise holding the whole thing up. Is it a little frothy? Well, ok. Bawdy? Only sometimes. Does it ring true? Oh, yes. And that’s why it works. That, and good songwriting technique."
