Elliot, A Soldier's Fugue at Park Square Theatre

Elliot, A Soldier's Fugue

Park Square Theatre
20 W 7th Pl St. Paul

Elliot Ortiz is home from Iraq. Like his father and grandfather before him, the eager soldier is forced to unravel his experience as he nurses his injuries and considers returning to the frontlines. Elliot's mother, a nurse in Vietnam, holds three generations of this family's soldiers together -- turning their city lot into a lush and healing tropical garden. Hudes's poetic fugue is a unique non-political exploration of the tolls of war from an often overlooked point of view.

  Elliot, A Soldier's Fugue Reviews

Twin Cities Pioneer Press - Somewhat Recommended

"...It's a high-blown idea, but playwright Quiara Alegria Hudes brings it to earth in "Elliot, a Soldier's Fugue," which opened this weekend at Park Square Theatre. The title character is a young Marine wounded in Iraq, facing the decision of whether or not to sign on for another hitch. As he remembers his past and contemplates his future, his story is interwoven with those of his parents (who, as an infantryman and a nurse, met in Vietnam) and his grandfather, who served in Korea.

"...The beauty of the writing was immediately apparent in this production. The set designer, Kit Mayer, left the stage mostly bare, which left the task of creating scenes to the actors and the writing. As the play slowly progressed the stage became more and more cluttered, seemingly emphasizing the interconnectedness of each character’s life and connecting the past to the present. It was a powerful image and choice by Mayer and helped complement the already powerful dialogue created by Hudes."
