Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune at Minneapolis Theatre Garage

Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune

Minneapolis Theatre Garage
711 West Franklin Avenue Minneapolis

The setting of Frankie and Johnny is a walk-up apartment on Manhattan's West Side where, as the curtain rises, Frankie (a waitress) and Johnny (a short-order cook who works in the same restaurant) are discovered in bed. It is their first encounter, after having met several weeks ago on the job, and Frankie is hopeful that Johnny will now put on his clothes and depart, so she can return to her usual routine of watching TV and eating ice cream. But Johnny, a compulsive talker (and romantic), has other ideas. He is convinced that he loves Frankie, a notion that she, at first, considers to be ridiculous. She has had more disappointments than delights in life, and he is the veteran of one broken marriage already. And neither of them is in the bloom of youth. Yet out of their sometimes touching, sometimes hilarious interplay the promise of a relationship beyond a "one-night stand" does begin to emerge and, as the lights dim, the two are back in bed again, but this time side-by-side, holding hands before the glowing television screen.

Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune Reviews

Star Tribune - Somewhat Recommended

"...This light romantic comedy cannot bear a lot of psychic weight, nor should it. It does, however, require an emotional investment that has us humming Debussy’s great “Clair de Lune” and wishing the best to Frankie and Johnny. This production accomplishes only the former."

"...The staging at the Minneapolis Theatre Garage by Casting Spells Productions won't do much to overcome those sensibilities, and it has other challenges for audiences willing to enter the world of the play on its own terms. Shanan Custer and Charles Hubbell are both top-notch actors, but neither is your typical romantic lead. That's appropriate to the script, and the show offers them an artistic stretch from their comfort zones of the roles they more typically play."

Aisle Say Twin Cities - Recommended

"...In only their second ever production, Casting Spells Productions takes on Terrence McNally's late-80s play, Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune. It's a bold choice, given that it's a two-hour production with a very intimate setting and features only two characters; with a weak performance by either actor or mismatched chemistry, the whole thing would fall apart. Luckily, both Shanan Custer and Charles Hubbell are well up to the task of carrying the entire show on their shoulders."
