  Hir at Mixed Blood Theatre

Hir

Mixed Blood Theatre
1501 S 4th Street Minneapolis

Obie Award winning drag icon, queer performance artist, and playwright, Taylor Mac has penned a hilarious and unsettling comedy that is a deconstructed family drama put through a commedia wringer in a style he coins Absurd Realism. It is simultaneously a farcical and disarming satire, a discourse on power, and a blistering critique of "troglodyte fascist hetero-normative" culture.

  Hir Reviews

Star Tribune - Recommended

"...If “Hir” has a challenge, it is that playwright Mac’s educational impulse sometimes overwhelms his dramatic sensibilities. As the script repeats ideas and themes to make sure that we get them, it underestimates our intelligence. Still, that impulse is understandable, given that this 105-minute play, written a year ago, is so thematically and stylistically up-to-the-minute."

Twin Cities Daily Planet - Highly Recommended

"...Because Hir is so off-the-wall from start to finish, it makes for an ideal evening of live theater. Anything, good or bad, could happen with these people in close proximity to one another. That’s what gives Hirits edge. The play, and the characters in it, are capable of anything. The production lives up to that standard—actors, director, designers, the stage crew that transforms the home during intermission. Mixed Blood is on a roll this season. See Hir. You’re probably not going to get a chance to see anything else quite like it this year, even if it is only March."

Twin Cities Pioneer Press - Recommended

"...Make no mistake: "Hir" is a challenging play. But it's also an enjoyable one. Equal parts chronicle and critique, it's a very smart, prescient story that both merits and rewards the brain power it demands."

How Was The Show - Somewhat Recommended

"...“Let’s put the fun in dysfunctional!” exclaims playwright Taylor Mac and – for a while, anyhow – he succeeds. The Mixed Blood stage for Hir (at MB through Mar 22) swirls with a wild scatter of dirty laundry (“I don’t do laundry any more,” asserts Mistress Paige, played by the great Sally Wingert. “I’m all about metaphor”), sprung furniture, unwashed dishes, crooked unicorn hangings, walls acrawl with filth. The nifty set design is by Joseph Stanley, who crafts beautiful work out of the miniscule Mixed Blood budget. Ditto costumist Trevor Bowen."

Aisle Say Twin Cities - Highly Recommended

"...In all, HIR is a hard-hitting play that has a lot of questions to raise about a lot of different issues. It’s not an easy, relaxing show to experience, but it offers a lot of excellent food for thought, and a clever script delivered by an excellent cast."
