Juno and the Paycock at Guthrie Theatre

Juno and the Paycock

Guthrie Theatre
818 South 2nd Street Minneapolis

One of the great plays of the 20th century, Juno and the Paycock is an epic tale of one family's survival in Dublin following the Irish Civil War. Jack Boyle, known to his neighbors as the "paycock," is out of work and determined to stay that way. He and his sidekick Joxer spend their time drinking and playing cards while Juno, the matriarch, attempts to keep their family together. When the family learns of an inheritance from a distant relative, the money is spent before it even arrives. But will they transcend the events that conspire to keep them in their place? Director Joe Dowling's legendary Gate Theatre production opened on Broadway in 1988 and launched his prolific directing career in the U.S. The New York Times raved "Dowling's Juno is alive at every level - as a boisterous comedy, as wrenching tragedy, as blistering social commentary." You won't want to miss this singular evening in the theater.

  Juno and the Paycock Reviews

Twin Cities Pioneer Press - Recommended

"...It would be comparatively easy to paint Jack's wife, Juno, as a steely, suffering matriarch, but Anita Reeves finds many more hues. She scolds and cajoles, guides and goads, protects and deflects -- all the while seeming to keep a tight rein on herself and her emotions. But when faced with a pair of catastrophic calamities near the play's end, Reeves strips Juno emotionally bare, keening in loss, howling in rage, galvanizing in strength."

How Was The Show - Recommended

"...You have to respect Joe Dowling for closing his long and celebrated tenure as the Guthrie Theater's artistic director with Sean O'Casey's classic Juno and the Paycock, a show that pays homage to his most personal cultural and artistic influences while being consistently honest and challenging. The show is an appropriate send-off, as not only does it convey deep appreciation of Dowling's heritage and previous work at Dublin's Abbey Theater, but it was his mounting of this show on Broadway in 1988 that helped usher him to prominence."

"...But Juno and the Paycock is still just another play, one of many from which you can choose to see this month. If you want to see Dowling's "last bow" go see this play. But that's not the only reason you should see this play. It is truly great theatre-a great script by a great playwright (one of the best that ever lived), an incredible cast, breathtaking sets, and a director who truly understands the lifeblood of this play. It will be a night of theatre you won't soon forget."
