On the Town

Bloomington Center for the Arts
1800 W. Old Shakopee Rd. Bloomington

A classic American musical comedy, On the Town is one of Broadway’s most energetic and inventive musicals. As three soldiers come to New York City on a whirlwind, one-day shore leave, On the Town follows their antics and exploits as they seek to experience and embrace life. Set against the backdrop of WWII and the soldiers’ own uncertain futures, On the Town is an exuberant and poignant comedy. Experience Leonard Bernstein’s first Broadway score the way it was meant to be: with full orchestration from BCT’s live orchestra, large, energetic dance sequences and amusingly innovative sets.

Star Tribune - Recommended

"...Lehr's masterful comic timing is much in evidence and she also helps her young cast give the essentially cartoonish characters added depth and humanity. As the sailors, A.J. Longabaugh, Andrew Newman and C. Ryan Shipley are endearing hicks overwhelmed by the city. Shipley gives the standout performance, making the most of the score's strongest ballad, "Lonely Town.""

Twin Cities Pioneer Press - Somewhat Recommended

"...Director Wendy Lehr has assembled a talented cast, and that cannot have been an easy task because, unlike some shows that can get away with a couple of good dancers and a couple of good voices, "On the Town" requires two dozen people who can dance and sing and act, often all at the same time. The show is probably as difficult to cast with non-professionals as "A Chorus Line." BCT's "On the Town" confronts the same issue its "A Chorus Line" did a few seasons back: The singing and acting are fine, but you can't fake dancing."
