Only One Sophie
Illusion Theater
528 Hennepin Avenue Minneapolis
Only One Sophie explores the rituals of a Midwestern American Jewish family as seen through the eyes of twelve-year-old Michael. Through song and story, this touching musical moves back and forth in time. In one scene, the scene looks in on the 1960 funeral of the family's matriarch Sophie, with the family gathering to sit Shiva at Michael's house. Then, you're whisked further back in time to 1905 and Sophie's "walk across Poland" to America. Only One Sophie explores the young boy's craving to understand his place in the world and by the end of the piece Michael learns about his family's secrets, his true heritage and how to let go. Playwright Michael Robins' work is steeped in the influences of Jewish immigrant culture and traditions as they connect and conflict with a modern American Jewish upbringing. Experience this poignant tale at the Illusion Theater in Minneapolis.

Only One Sophie Reviews
Star Tribune - Somewhat Recommended
"...The script jumps back and forth between her tombstone in contemporary St. Paul, which is visited by family, and her ancestral home. This approach, which mixes memories with the present, blurs the narrative in "Sophie," especially since designer Dean Holzman's metaphor-laden set is unchanging (the scenery includes a tombstone, what looks like a giant upturned fork and a large picture frame). Sometimes it's unclear which characters are speaking, where they are and when the action is taking place."
