Based on a true story, Philly has nothing to do with the city of Philadelphia, but it is a high-energy big stage musical about Johnny Calacucci, a struggling songwriter in 1980s New York who discovers Phyllis, a woman with an amazing voice, and he decides to make her a star. Phyllis becomes Philly, and joins John in creating a band of personality-laden musicians that set out to achieve their dreams of escaping the projects and hitting the big time. But it may take a little help from a neighborhood mobster to get them to the top. With 24 original songs that range from classic rock to traditional Broadway show tunes, and dance numbers that run from tap and ballroom to contemporary and jazz, Philly fills the entertainment bill for the whole family. Catch the latest version of this uplifting show, complete with new songs, at the Sabes Theater in St. Louis Park.
