Fela! at Ordway Center for the Performing Arts

Fela!

Ordway Center for the Performing Arts
345 Washington St St. Paul

“Fela!” is a new musical directed and choreographed by Tony Award-winner Bill T. Jones, in which audiences are welcomed into the extravagant, decadent and rebellious world of Afro-beat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Using his pioneering music (a blend of jazz, funk, and African rhythm and harmonies), “Fela!” explores Kuti’s controversial life as an artist, political activist and revolutionary musician. A three-time Tony Award winner in 2010, this production arrives at the Ordway direct from Broadway. Called “a terrific dance party of a musical” by the Associated Press.

  Fela! Reviews

Star Tribune - Highly Recommended

"...Fela often said that music was his weapon, his songs provoking repression from the Nigerian government. This messianic sense of himself, a seriousness of mission, is missing from Jones's hagiography. What we have is something approaching ritual -- an artistic meditation elevated by pageantry but devoid of the dramatic engine. That propulsive rhythm kicks up our heartbeat, engages our energy and then sends us out the door spent."

How Was The Show - Highly Recommended

"...You have just until June 17 to see “Fela” at the Ordway before it heads back to Broadway for a run starting in July. Forget what it was you were going to do this week, quit reading this and get your tickets! You don’t want to miss this one. It’s infused with infectious music, phenomenal dancing and impressive spectacle. But better yet, this is a show about something – and it’s true."
