Wreck

Guthrie Theatre
818 South 2nd Street Minneapolis

In Black Label Movement's riveting Wreck, 13 survivors caught in the hold of a fast sinking ship grapple with seemingly inevitable destruction. Plunging towards an emotional event horizon where violence and cooperation, obsession and compassion, and fear and tenderness meet, the work asks how a community of strangers might face the Abyss. Created by 2012 McKnight Choreography Fellow Carl Flink and set to an original score by local composer Mary Ellen Childs, Wreck is a visceral feast for both eyes and ears. Dance Magazine declared, Wreck delivers "the combination of buoyant athleticism and feral intensity that is a hallmark of Flink's style. . . . [I]t's like watching a display of cascading fireworks."

  Wreck Reviews

Twin Cities Pioneer Press - Somewhat Recommended

"...Yet it didn't engage me emotionally as much as its premise hinted it might. Blame that partially on modern dance clinging to the classical ballet convention of performers having impassive faces. Other than occasional open-mouthed silent screams, there was nothing in the dancers' expressions to further flesh out their individuality or bring me deeper into how they were processing the situation. A grave relentlessness emerged that left most of the complicated layers of encountering death unexamined."

Aisle Say Twin Cities - Recommended

"...So, if you like dance, like interpretive work, like haunting, tragic tales, or just feel like trying something a little different, jump into the depths and let yourself be immersed in the magic ambiance of Wreck. And marvel at the physical prowess that lets these 13 performers leap and run and writhe and dance for 75 minutes with minimal pausing, while you’re at it."
