You Can't Take It With You

Jungle Theatre
2951 Lyndale Ave South Minneapolis

Long before TV's Modern Family, there were the Sycamores, three generations living under one roof on New York's Upper West Side, determined to follow their bliss. After daughter Alice (Anna Sundberg) accepts straight-laced Tony Kirby's (Hugh Kennedy) marriage proposal, she must introduce her fiance's prim-and-proper parents to her rather more eccentric relatives. When the wildly different families meet, the worlds of the wealthy, uptight Kirbys and the off-kilter Sycamores collide. Universal and timeless, You Can't Take It With You is one of America's most beloved comedy classics.

You Can't Take It With You Reviews

Twin Cities Pioneer Press - Highly Recommended

"...By contemporary standards, "You Can't Take it With You" is an extravagant play, particularly for a comedy: 18 actors and two intermissions, live xylophone music, and clattering printing presses, kittens, blintzes and more. It's also the sort of quaint old play in which the action and the humor ambles rather than gallops, especially in the early going. Director Gary Gisselman deftly keeps things moving along, but he also allows some of the play's most delightful moments to occur in silences."

How Was The Show - Highly Recommended

"...The plain fact is, You Can’t Take It With You is fabulous fun. The large Vanderhoff manse is created in all its splendor: the large center stage dinner table, the xylophone nook, the scary basement where fireworks are tested (and why the house hasn’t been, as a result, reduced to ashes eludes me), the playwright’s corner piled with mss, the busy staircase, the foyer where one coming in must always – always – make an entrance. Here, eccentricity is celebrated. And into this maison de folie Alice, the only sane Sycamore, timorously brings her beau Tony."

Aisle Say Twin Cities - Recommended

"...When a play has been performed regularly across the country for 79 years, and has spawned an Oscar-winning film version, it seems safe to assume that it's got some pretty good things going for it. Indeed, You Can't Take It With You is a charming and clever story with a witty script, and the Jungle Theater's production features a cast that is every bit as talented as the story is entertaining (that is to say: very)."
